Background of the study
The use of digital note-taking tools in secondary schools has gained significant attention as an effective method for enhancing student learning experiences. These tools provide students with the ability to easily capture, organize, and review information. In Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, the introduction of digital note-taking tools into secondary schools aims to improve the learning process by enabling students to create digital versions of their notes that can be easily accessed and edited. The tools often include features such as text formatting, cloud storage, and multimedia integration, which have the potential to offer a more interactive and efficient approach to note-taking compared to traditional pen-and-paper methods.

While digital note-taking has the potential to improve students’ ability to record and retain information, its effectiveness can be influenced by factors such as access to technology, the students' digital literacy, and the appropriateness of the tools being used. In Jalingo, where educational infrastructure is still developing, the effectiveness of digital note-taking tools remains uncertain. Previous studies have shown mixed results regarding the impact of digital note-taking on students’ academic performance, with some researchers highlighting the benefits, while others have pointed out challenges related to device access and technical competence (Smith & Nwogu, 2023; Okoro & Izuogu, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of digital note-taking tools in secondary schools in Jalingo by considering the various factors that contribute to or hinder their successful use.

Statement of the problem
The introduction of digital note-taking tools in secondary schools in Jalingo has been met with mixed results. While some students are able to leverage these tools effectively, others face challenges that limit their ability to maximize their benefits. Factors such as insufficient training, lack of access to devices, and inadequate technical support may prevent students from fully utilizing the digital tools. Furthermore, there is limited research on the overall effectiveness of digital note-taking tools in the context of Jalingo's secondary schools. Without a comprehensive understanding of these factors, it is difficult to determine the true impact of digital note-taking tools on students' academic performance. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of these tools, considering both the enabling and limiting factors.

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of digital note-taking tools in enhancing the learning experience of secondary school students in Jalingo Local Government Area.
  2. To assess the factors that influence the effectiveness of digital note-taking tools in Jalingo’s secondary schools.
  3. To determine the relationship between the use of digital note-taking tools and students' academic performance in Jalingo.

Research questions

  1. How effective are digital note-taking tools in enhancing the learning experience of secondary school students in Jalingo?
  2. What factors influence the effectiveness of digital note-taking tools in secondary schools in Jalingo?
  3. Is there a relationship between the use of digital note-taking tools and the academic performance of students in Jalingo?

Significance of the study
This research will contribute to the body of knowledge on the effectiveness of digital note-taking tools in secondary schools, particularly in the context of Jalingo Local Government Area. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers on the benefits and challenges of digital note-taking, and offer recommendations for improving its implementation in schools to support better learning outcomes.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to secondary schools within Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State. It focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of digital note-taking tools in the learning process and the factors influencing their use. The research does not extend beyond Jalingo, and it does not consider other digital learning tools outside of note-taking.
